Look to the Lord

The Bible is full of directions for living a supernatural spiritual life. These directions are based on spiritual principles. What I mean by that is that God’s word gives us his directive, which produces a desired result.

The Oxford dictionary defines a principle as “a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.”

In my upcoming blogs, I will share some spiritual principles set out in the Bible. Although there are many spiritual principles in the Bible, I will touch on only a few because we only “know in part and we see in part,” and my revelation knowledge of God is limited.

I can only reveal to others what God reveals to me through the revelation of his word and through my own personal experience.

The Holy Spirit gives us understanding as we read and meditate on his word.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power. Ephesians 1:17,19

I want to share with you what the Lord taught me about the principle of “looking to the Lord.”

Looking to the Lord is a different concept than seeking the Lord.

Since they are two different words, they have two different meanings.

The word for seek in Hebrew is dârash. It means to pursue, to search, or to inquire.

When we seek the Lord, it is for the purpose of finding an answer to a question or to pursue him for something.

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Matthew 6:33

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. Jeremiah 20 12, 13

Seeking the Lord requires diligent prayer, fasting, and reading the word until we receive an answer. It is important to “seek the Lord”; however, the concept of “looking to the Lord” is somewhat different.

Both seeking and looking can work in conjunction, but this is not necessarily so.

When we look to the Lord, we are directing our gaze upon him. We are not looking at another source for our seeking. However, we can look to the Lord without necessarily seeking him for something.

To ‘look to the Lord’ means to behold the Lord. That is to observe or watch the Lord in a state of reverence or awe.

When our spiritual eyes are fixed on Jesus Christ, we begin to see him as he is and not as our natural minds imagine him to be.

Scriptures tell us that those who ‘look to the Lord’ are lightened. Some versions say radiant.

The Hebrew word is nâhar, which means to shine or beam. It can also mean to flow like a river.

Looking to the Lord requires turning our eyes or attention to him. That means getting our eyes off the world and our problems and fixing them on Jesus.

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

When we look to the Lord, we keep our eyes on him. We watch what he is doing, not what is going on around us.

Watching requires looking.

Jesus said, ‘what I see my Father do that I do”.

Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. John 5:19

Jesus spent hours in prayer looking to the Father. He watched what the Father showed him. Revelation, knowledge, and wisdom come from looking to the Lord. By watching in the Spirit and looking into God’s word, we receive directives from the Holy Spirit.

Beholding or looking to the Lord is a mindset of humility. It means recognizing that we don’t know everything. We don’t have all the answers.

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. Habakkuk 2:1

Watching requires looking.

Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces shall never be ashamed. Psalm 34:5

To look in the Hebrew is tsâphâh. It means to observe, to peer into, behold, wait on, keep watch.

Scriptures tell us that when we pray, we should look up. That means that we should take our eyes off ourselves and our situation and look to the Lord.

I will pray in the morning and look up. Psalms 5:3

When we look up, we see Jesus. We turn our eyes to what he is doing.

How do we see what Jesus is doing? How are our spiritual eyes enlightened?

By observing Jesus Christ through his word.

We watch what Jesus did in the gospels. We hear what Jesus told the disciples. We learn from others who have seen Jesus or experienced him. The Holy Spirit will grant us revelation through his word.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26

Then we wait on the Lord for his direction.

Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. 1 Chronicles 16:11

When we look to the Lord, we learn about him.

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

As we meditate, ponder, and consider what Jesus did through his word, he gives us understanding. We come to know God intimately through his word and by the revelation of the Holy Spirit.

Then, when we know God by understanding his ways, we can do mighty exploits in his name.

The people who do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. Daniel 11:32

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. John 14:12
