Recently I was in a Christian meeting where the leaders used a scripture out of context in order to make the sheep compliant to their way of doing things.
The verse, “Be still and know that I am God,” was put forth in order to constrain the sheep. In reality what they actually meant was, “Shut up, sit up, listen and do what you are told.”
This incident led me to examine more closely that scripture being used. I found out just as I suspected that the scripture was being misused. Whether deliberatly or ignorantly, only the Lord knows. But either way that scripture was used out of context to further an agenda. God warns us about doing that.
But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 2 Corinthians 4:2
That being said, let us examine what the Bible has to say concerning this verse.
Psalm 46:10
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
According to the Hebrew language, the word for “be still,” in this verse is râphâh which means Yehovah heals. Râphâh also means to let go of one’s effort or to cease striving. It can also mean that God has you in his hands.
So in effect “to be still” means don’t lose heart because God is our healer and we are in his hands.
To ‘be still’ does not mean shut up, sit up and listen up.
God tells us in that scripture verse, “I am your healer”, trust me and ‘know’ that I am God.
To know is an important part of this verse.
When we know that God wants to heal us, we are able to recognize his love for us. We acknowledge his sovereign majesty in all things.
To be still in knowing God does not matter in which bodily position we are in. Whether we are in a state of prayer or jogging down a country road. Its a state of one’s heart.
Those that used this word decietfully were tryng to make others shut up and listen to them. In other words they were operating in a spirit of control and manipulation. That is what the Bible calls witchcraft, a work of the flesh. Galatians 5:20-26
This was an imporatnat lesson to me. I saw how Satan disquising himself as an angel of light will misuse the word of God to perpetrate his agenda, which is always hurtful, destructive and evil.
Continuing on with this verse we see that God is letting us know that HE IS GOD who will be exalted in the earth.
While the emphasis used (by those leaders) in this verse was ‘be still’ in actuality the emphasis should be on ‘Know that I am God’.
When we know Yehovah Rapha the Lord our healer we can be still in every situation. We don’t need to be anxious, worry, fearful, or doubtful because God has everything under HIS control. Yehovah is the Lord of heaven and earth! He will bring to us his healing, restoration. HE will comfort us with his love.
So, next time when you hear this scripture being used or misused, remember that knowing God is knowing God is our healer. He is in control of our lives.
