In my last blog I talked about being made alive in Christ.
Once we are born again we are dead to sin and made alive unto God.
To find out more about this topic refer to the blog in the link below.
In order to walk in the Spirit we must ‘put on Christ’.
To ‘put on’ in this context means to be clothed with or arrayed with or endued with.
The Greek word is enduo.
It means to provide with a quality or ability.
To ‘put on Christ’ is to be provided with the qualities or abilities of Christ.
This ability or quality of ‘putting on Christ’ is provided for by the Holy Spirit to the born again person.
That is, through the Holy Spirit who is given to us by God, the character or nature of Christ is endowed to the born again person.
Many try to live the Christian life in their own power and strength.
This is due to either ignorance or unwillingness.
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Colossians 1:27-28
Holy Spirit is our, teacher counselor, intercessor, and helper.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:25,26
Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26,27
What? know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own? For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
The scriptures admonish the born again person to ‘put on Christ.”
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. Romans 13:14
To ‘put on Christ’ is more than a metaphor. Its an admonition to do something.
Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. Colossians 3:9,11
This ‘put on Christ” admonition cannot be done in one’s own power or ability.
The same word, endo is used in this scripture.
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high. Luke 24:49
Endo in the Greek is the same word as endue in English.
Endue (Oxford dictionary) to invest or endow with some gift, quality, or faculty. To put on.
Putting this all together we can see that Holy Spirit gives the born again child of God the ability to ‘put on Christ’ so that they do not obey the carnal nature.
The ‘put on’ is an admonition to do something through the ability of the Holy Spirit.
In other words Holy Spirit gives his children the power and ability to perform the admonition.
Notice that the admonition is not for us to perform in our own ability. This is because we cannot perform without being endowed with the power to perform.
To try to perform in one’s own ability is to go back to the Mosaic law.
The carnal nature is beyond the ability of a person to control in their own power. It takes Holy Spirit power to control the flesh.
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that you cannot do the things that you would. But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the law. Galatians 5:17,18
The admonition to ‘put on Christ’ does however take our Cooperation. That is we must yield or give way to Holy Spirit to perform through us.
That is we relinquish our self ability and yield to Holy Spirit endowment.
Holy Spirit will never override our will.
We must ask, believe and receive.
Therefore I say unto you, What things soever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. Mark 11:24
Now that we know that we need to ‘put on Christ’ by the power of the Holy Spirit we can take a look at some of the ‘put on’ admonitions. (stay tune to my next blog)
Scripture tells us to ‘put on the new man.’
And that you put on the new man which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:24
In order to walk in the Spirit we must ‘put on Christ’. That is we must be clothed with or endued with Christ’s character by the power of the Holy Spirit.
To ‘put on Christ’ means to be provided with the qualities or abilities of Christ.
This is the new man.
Holy Spirit gives us his miraculous power or ability to walk in the Spirit by ‘putting on Christ’.
In my next blog, I will go into more detail concerning the “putting on’ admonitions.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57
