The City of Ancient of Philadelphia, (Modern name Alaşehir) was founded by King Attalus II Philadelphus (r. 159–138 BC) of Pergamon. The city was named for the King’s love for his brother, his successor. (Attalus II, 159–138 BC)
The city was called “Philadelphos,” meaning “one who loves his brother.”
Under Roman rule, Philadelphia became an imperial cult of emperor worship. Philadelphia was also known for having earthquakes, which may be why Jesus promised the church of Philadelphia that he would make them a ‘pillar in the temple’ if they were overcomers in his name.
The church of Philadelphia had challenges. Not only were they persecuted by Roman secularism but also by religious opposition. This combination makes for shaky ground if one is not grounded on the rock of Jesus Christ.
Jesus told the church of Philadelphia that they had a little strength. In other words, they were holding on while the shaking was going on all around them. They did not deny his name in spite of persecution.
Sounds like today, huh? Shakings, persecutions, hardship.
This shaking is not only coming at the Lord’s church from the world and the religious folks but from inside their inner circle! From family and friends!
There is a lot of shaking going on right now in this world. The sifting has started. The tares are being removed from the wheat!
Are you a weary pilgrim wandering through this world of woe? Misunderstood? Rejected for your faith? Hated because you belong to Jesus Christ?
Well, hold on dear believer, don’t let go of the helm of the Lord’s garment! Praise him in your storm! He has your back!
The church of Philadelphia was promised preservation from temptation if they continued to be faithful. The Lord promised to see them through! In the same way God has promised to see us through every trial and temptation.
Not only that, but the church of Philadelphia was promised eternal blessings where they would be honored in the Lord’s future kingdom! If they held on to his promises!
Whatever shaking you are enduring right now, friend, remember that the Lord will hold you up. He has all the keys to the kingdom of God. That is why he mentioned this to the church of Philadelphia.
Jesus Christ alone has the power to open and close doors! Seek him for He can open or close the doors to your situation.
Knock and keep on knocking! He will not fail you! He has the key to your deliverance!
“Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.” Revelation3:11
