You Must Be Born Again

In my prior blogs I talked about how the Galatians were bewitched by the law keepers into putting themselves under the Mosaic law. I shared how Paul called them foolish for exchanging God’s grace for law keeping. I explained how those under grace are partakers of the blessings of Abraham.

I also shared how those born of God are now heirs of God through faith in Jesus Christ. The Old Covenant has been fulfilled by Christ. The law was a shadow of Christ but not the full reality of his salvation.

Jesus came to redeem those under the curse of the law. To make them Sons of God by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

In this blog I will share what it means to be born again or born of God.

Paul tells the Galatians that circumcision does not lead to salvation.

Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.

Galatians 5:2

In order to understand this we must understand what it means to be circumcised. Why does Paul use this term?

Paul is not just talking about being cut in the flesh. Circumcision means more than that in this verse. It represents the Old Covenant system.

Circumcision was the seal of the Old Covenant. Under the New Covenant the seal is the Holy Spirit.

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. Ephesians 1:13

In other words the Old Covenant way of doing things is done away with in Christ.

In that He says, “ A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Hebrews 8:13

Prior to Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, circumcision was an act that sealed the covenant God made with Abraham. That covenant or promise to make Abraham the Father of many nations was fullfilled in Christ. Now every tribe and nation can come to salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. Circumcision of the flesh is no longer needed. Jesus said on the cross ‘It is finished’.

As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. Genesis 17:4-6

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:14

What did Jesus mean by It is finished?

The Old Covenant is finished.

That is the covenant between Abraham and Isaac under the law of Moses was done away with in Christ.

The New Covenant which includes the Gentiles was established through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The curtain to the Holy of holiness was torn in two.

What did that curtain represent?

A veil. A veil which remains on those who are outside the New Covenant of grace.

For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. II Corinthians 3:13-17

Now we don’t need to go through priests or intermediaries to have access to God. We can go directly to God’s throne by the blood of Jesus.

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus. Hebrews 10:19

Scriptures tell us that we have a new high priest after the order of Melchizedek

Not after the order of Aaron.

For He testifies: “You are a priest forever. According to the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:17

The order of Melchizedek existed prior to the order of Aaron. The Melchizedek system is not dependent on lineage but on Jesus Christ being the high priest and ALL his disciples Kings and Priests for God. (from every tribe and nation)

and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelations 1:6

Under the New Covenant we have a new temple. The temple under the Old Covenant was destroyed as Jesus prophesied in 70 CE.

God has given us a new temple where we worship God. Not one made by man’s hands.

This temple is our bodies. God lives in his people.

Those born of the Spirit have been cleansed of sin. Reconciled to God. Made new creatures in Christ.

We receive the promise of the Spirit by receiving Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord. By surrendering our lives to him, the Holy Spirit comes to abide in our earthly vessel.

This is why the law is no longer necessary. Those born of God are no longer servants to the law. We are servants of the law giver who resides in us.

This is why Jesus said you must be born again to enter into the kingdom of God. Those under the law are slaves to the law. They are under the old way of doing things. They are under the curse of the law because no one can keep the law in its entirety except God.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3: 13,14

Those born again are under the New Covenant of grace.

They have the power of God dwelling inside of them. They have the lawgiver himself to empower them to live a life that pleases God.

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:13

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26

I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Ezekiel 36:27

Do you want to be free from your sin? Free from slavery to a system you can never live up to? If so the answer is to believe in your heart that Jesus Christ gave his life for you and that he rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

If you call on Jesus to save you he has promised to save you completely and totally. He will come to reside in you and be with you forever.

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! Luke 11:13

The Spirit of God will lead you into all truth. He will reveal his word to you and give you power to overcome sin.

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. John 15:25

Once you are born of the Spirit you will live in the Spirit.

Then God will teach you how to walk in the Spirit.
