There are many eschatological interpretations of end time Babylon, as depicted in Revelations Chapters 17 and 18.
I will give you mine.
To understand end time Babylon, we must look at historical Babylon.
Babylon goes back all the way from the beginning of Creation.
The Bible tells us in Genesis chapter 10 that Nimrod, the son of Cush, was a mighty ruler in the land of Shinar (lower Mesopotamia, modern Iraq or Sumer, which was the Sumerian name) Nimrod was the ruler over the Canaanite lineage in his day. He built a tower or ziggurat temple. This tower was dedicated to the god of Nimrod.
Nimrod’s god was the god, Marduk or ‘AMAR.UTU, commonly called Bēl or Baal in Hebrew. It means Lord or Master.
Marduk was the sun god, associated with the ‘light bearer.’ The Bible calls him Lucifer, the shining one. Marduk is associated with the “Tree of Life.” That old serpent who deceives the world.
Marduk’s symbol was the spade. The Bible references the spade as a tool for cultivation. It symbolizes human labor in bringing forth the fruits of the earth.
Cain, Nimrod’s grandfather, was a tiller of the earth. Just like his grandfather, Nimrod worked with his hands to build a tower or ziggurat. Nimrod constructed a man made religious center devoid of God’s grace.
Marduk’s sidekick was mušḫuššu, which means dragon or red serpent.
Nimrod was obsessed with the second heavens or constellation. He wanted to get as close as possible to his god. That is why he built a tower or temple ziggurat in honor of his god, Marduk or Lucifer.
In Babylonian texts, the mušḫuššu, or beast, was described as having the torso of a fish, the tail of a snake, the forepaws of a lion, the hind legs of an eagle, wings, and a dragon head.
Scriptures call Babel ‘the city and the tower.’ It was both a city-state and a center of false worship. In the Assyrian language, the city, Bāb-ilim, meant “gate of God. “
Yehovah the one true God destroyed Babel because it represented man’s rebellion against God. Nimrod was leading people away from the worship of the one true God, Yehovah, to the worship of Lucifer, Satan the deceiver.
After God destroyed Babel, fallen mankind eventually rebuilt Babylon. The Bible refers to early Babylon as the Land of Shinar in Genesis 10:10. This is the same area where the original Babylon was located. Ur was a city located in that area. It predated the city of Babylon. Ur was a port city on the Persian Gulf. It was the oldest known city, inhabited until 450 BCE.
God called Abram out of Ur or pre-Babylon. God gave Abram a new name, Abraham, and directed him to worship only Yehovah, the one true God. Abraham followed God and eventually had a son, who became the Nation of Israel. Yehovah or Yeshuah was and is the Messiah of Israel, who saves everyone who calls upon his name.
The earliest Historical record of Babylon is recorded on a clay tablet. It references the city of Babylon from the reign of Shar-Kali-Sharri (2217–2193 BCE) of the Akkadian Empire.
The Akkadian Empire was the first empire of Mesopotamia. It succeeded the city-states of Sumer.
The Sumerian city-states like Ur were defeated by the invading Akkadians in 2350 BCE.
Sumerian civilization began between c. 4500 and 4000 BCE, but the earliest historical records date to around 2900 BCE.
The Sumerians built the Ziggurat of Ur to worship the Sumerian moon deity, Nanna, also known as Sin.
The one true God, Yehovah, forbids the worship of the second heavens. This ziggurat construction is the same pattern as the Babel city-state, which God destroyed.
And when you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon and stars—all the host of heaven—do not be enticed to bow down and worship what the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. Deuteronomy 4:19
The Assyrians replaced the Akkadians in ruling over Babylon.
Hammurabi was an Amorite king of Babylon. He wrote the Code of Hammurabi, a famous book of laws losely taken from God’s law which he gave to Moses.
The Assyrians worshiped Ishtar, the moon goddess of love, war, and sexuality. Ishtar is the ‘Queen of Heaven.” Jeremiah 7:18
Around 1600 BCE, the Kassites took over Babylon. These mountain people had integrated through trade with the Amorite Assyrians of Babylon. After the Hittites ransacked Babylon in1595 BCE., the Kassites tribes took over. The Kassite rulers returned the stolen idol Marduk to Babylon, making him equal to their god Shuqamuna.
The Kassites extended their power into Elam (Iran) and Arabia. After the Elamite tribes invaded Babylon, the Kassites were defeated. The Elamites restored Babylon to the Assyrians.
From 626-539 BCE the Chaldeans took power in Babylon. The Chaldeans were known for their knowledge of math, writing, astronomy, and occultic arts.
The Chaldeans originated from the Arphaxadites, who had migrated from the Levant (Cyprus and around the Mediterranean Sea) to Mesopotamia. According to the Bible, Arphaxad was Shem’s son, born 12 years after the flood.
According to the Bible, the Chaldean king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar II, conquered Jerusalem and sent the Jewish people into exile. (Book of Daniel)
Under Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon was a great empire. Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon around 600 BCE
At the end of twelve months, he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, ‘Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty? Daniel 4:29-30
Babylon was a famous city of antiquity. It was the capital of southern Mesopotamia (Babylonia) from the early 2nd millennium to the early 1st millennium BCE.
Babylon was the capital of the Neo-Babylonian (Chaldean) empire in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE.
Babylon was a city-state known for its contributions to science, astronomy, the arts, architecture, state religion, law, and politics.
Babylon eventually fell to the Persian king Cyrus the Great. This fall ended the reign of the last dynasty of Mesopotamia.
Under Cyrus Babylon became a part of the Achaemenid empire. Babylon was an administrative center.
When Babylon was conquered by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE Babylon was restored to much of its former glory.
After the death of Alexander Babylon became a part of the Seleucid Dynasty. From there Babylon fell to the Persian Parthian Empire, in the 2nd century then to gradual decline.
Babylon metaphorically symbolizes all that is worldly. Not only materialistically but spiritually.
Babylon is a Satanic counterfeit of the Kingdom of God. Babylon has a second heaven ruler—the light bearer or counterfeit light Lucifer with his fallen ones.
Babylon worships the host of heaven. Babylon is a counterfeit kingdom made in the image of fallen mankind. Babylon is filled with worldly, sensual, and godless wisdom.
In the Book of Revelation, Chapters 17 and 18, Babylon is depicted as both a city-state and a woman.
The woman sits on many waters. She rules over many people. Ishtar is her name.
Ishtar represents all that is spiritually opposed to the God of the Bible. Ishtar is dominant, sensual, cruel, and defiant. Ishtar promotes war and gives worldly wisdom.
Ishtar is the religious system of Babylon.
Ishtar rides the beast or mušḫuššu the red dragon.
The beast has a kingdom ruled by a man-god king. Babylon is Satan’s counterfeit kingdom—a city-state that promotes sin.
Babylon is anti christ from its inception.
All the rulers or god-kings of the earth have committed fornication with Ishtar of Babylon. All the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication. Revelations 17:2
I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. Revelations 17:3
Ishtar is Satan’s high priestess. The goddess of Babylon’s religious institution. She is dressed in purple and scarlet and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls.
Ishtar has in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.
Babylon is Ishtar’s cup. Babylon was known as the ‘city of gold.”
The Babylonians used gold for their temples, their statues, and their money.
Marduk (Bel) had a golden image of Bel or Baal, the golden calf idol worshiped by those who rebel against Yehovah.
And on Ishtar’s forehead is written
MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. Revelations 17:5
God says that in the end times, a final Babylon will rule the earth. Marduk, the sun god, or man of perdition will be the god-ruler of this end time Babylon.
This ruler, like Nebuchadnezzar, will demand worship. Demand that you bow down to his golden statue.
God calls his people to come out of Babylon because it is destined for destruction.
Come out of the idolatrous religious systems made in man’s image. Come out of the worldly influence of Marduk, the son god whose lord is the red serpent.
I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Revelations 18:4
God tells us in his word that those who overcome will not taste the second death. They will be preserved by the true King of kings and Lord of lords, Yeshua Messiah.
Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!” And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her, it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he told me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’
In conclusion, I believe end time Babylon will be based on the same pattern as the original Babel city state.
It will be both a religious system and a political system. End time Babylon will be ruled by a god man who stands in the place of God, leading people to worship Lucifer the counterfeit light bearer. This god man will come in his own name. Promoting himself. He will be boastful, proud, arrogant. A vile person.
This god man will claim to be a savior but in reality he will be a deciever.
Many will follow this god man into perdition. ( Daniel 7,8 & Revelation 18)
End time Babylon, the city state who has controlled the world will be destroyed in the end times by fire. After that the true God man Jesus the Christ, Yeshua Hamachiac will reign as King in the earth.
Watch for the pattern of historical Babylon. Then you will recognize this end time Babylon. It is evident to anyone with eyes to see.
