The Bible tells us that God can sustain our minds. This is an important principle that can transform our lives. The mind is a part of our natural physical body, but it is also a part of our spiritual reality.
The mind (Hebrew yester), according to the Bible, is the will, the imagination, the thoughts, and the emotions.
According to Isaiah 26:3, the Lord says that God will keep those in perfect peace who trust in him. This keeping or steadfastness is translated as samak, which in Hebrew means to support, uphold, lean, sustain.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3,
The key to having a sustained, peaceful mind is to trust or put our confidence in the Lord. To put our confidence in the Lord, we must have a relationship with the Lord. This comes by knowing God’s word.
Jesus is the word or logos of God in the flesh. God’s word is given to us through the scriptures. As we familiarize ourselves with scripture, we learn about the Lord. We learn what he has to say about every situation.
In effect, what we are doing by getting to know God through his word is having our minds renewed.
Scriptures exhort us to be renewed in the spirit of our mind. This is a part of the sanctification process or “putting off of the old man and putting on the new man.”
This renewing of the mind requires putting away old ways of thinking. (Ephesians 4:17-23)
We put away old ways of thinking by filling our minds with God’s word.
Old ways of thinking are any thoughts or ideas that are contrary to the word of God. Remember that the mind in Hebrew encompasses not only cognitive ideas but also emotional mindsets. Things that one feels emotionally that are contrary to the scriptures.
Rejecting negative thoughts and emotions does not necessarily put off the old way of thinking because some people actually think that the scriptures are negative in its context. Christians are required to think like Christ, which is not like the world’s way of thinking.
Having the mind of Christ is having a mind renewed by the word of God in its entirety. The mind of Christ rejects anything contrary to sound doctrine or teaching that encompasses the whole scriptures. This includes not accepting additional ideas or teaching added to scripture but also the omission of certain scriptures.
Jesus made it clear in the gospels that whatever we believe we shall receive. In other words, whatever we trust God for that lines up with the word of God, we can expect to receive.
Therefore, I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. Mark 11:24
To believe or trust in the Lord, we must have the mind of Christ concerning what we are believing for. For example, if we do not believe that God heals today, then we will not receive a healing. Believing in healing is the first step to receiving a healing, but it is not the only step. (Stay tuned as I will be doing a blog on healing soon)
If we reject the doctrine of healing then we will not receive healing. Its as simple as that. Where there is no faith there is no blessing. Hebrews 11:6
Having the mind of Christ in a matter brings peace about that situation.
For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16
If we believe the world instead of the Bible concerning a matter, then we will not have the mind of Christ for that matter. The wisdom of this world is a counterfeit to the wisdom of God.
Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Romans 12:2
Many people, including Christians, seek after worldly wisdom to find peace in their lives. That does not mean these Christians are not saved, but rather that they don’t trust God in a matter. Instead, they have placed their faith and confidence in the world’s wisdom.
God is a merciful God, and he will meet us where we are at in our spiritual growth. The people of the world do have a form of knowledge because they are God’s creation. However, with the world’s wisdom often comes other problems.Trusting in something other than God’s word has many side effects which do not produce peace.
Scriptures tell us that God will uphold our mind as we trust in his word. Our part is to cast down or reject all contrary words, ideas, or doctrines not in line with the mind of Christ. God has promised to help us to do that.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4,5
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:13
Setting our mind on the Spirit is to set our mind on Jesus Christ because the Holy Spirit always points to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the word of God manifest in the flesh.
As we set our minds on the word of God, the Lord will sustain us. He will bring us life and peace in every situation.
For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8
To have peace of mind we must be filled with the prince of peace who is God in the flesh. His word filling our mind creates in us a pure heart and a righteous spirit.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27
