Scripture tells us in Genesis chapter 4 that after Cain slew Abel, God said he was cursed. To be cursed under the law means to be under divine judgment, separated from God, living under the flesh or carnal desires.
Looking back a few verses, we see that Cain rejected the sacrifice of the lamb for justification and chose the works of his hands.
God gave Cain an opportunity to repent, but he refused. Instead, Cain became jealous and angry.
Rather than submit to God’s ways of doing things, Cain took matters into his own hands and rose up against his brother. He decided to rule his life rather than submit to salvation through the blood of the lamb.
The Bible says that those who are ruled by their carnal nature are always in opposition to the Spirit of God.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Romans 8:6-9
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Galatians 5:17
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
Following this spiritual principle we can see how and why Cain’s life ended up the way it did.
Cain thought that his punishment was unjust. He could not accept it. He argued with God about the results of his willful disobedience.
So what does Cain do? He tells God that if he has to be cursed or driven from God’s presence, he will be killed by someone or something.
In other words, without God’s divine blessing on his life, Cain would be fair game for any catastrophe out in the world.
Cain wanted God’s blessings on his life, even though he refused to follow the spiritual principles for abundant life and blessings: righteousness that comes by faith in the blood of the Lamb.
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Romans 3:21-27
God allows Cain to choose his own path, but marks him as a man under divine judgment.
The mark on Cain serves as a witness to others of the results of the carnal man choosing his own path and rejecting God’s plan of salvation. This mark, or generational sin, was passed down to all of Cain’s offspring.
So Cain, “went out from the presence of the Lord,” and dwelt in the land of Nod.
The Bible says that Cain built a city called Enoch after his son.
There is an historical record of the city that Cain built.
According to Flavius Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews, c. 93 CE): The famous Romano-Jewish historian Cain never did repent of his disobedience but instead became a ruthless warlord who built the first city.
In the ancient Cuneiform text the Sumerian King List names Eridu as the world’s very first city where “kingship descended from heaven” before the great flood.
Tell Abu Shahrain, situated in Iraq is considered to be the oldest city which was the main center for the worship of the Sumerian water god Enki, known by the Babylonians as Ea. He was considered the one who founded the city.
Archaeologist believe that Eridu may have been the site of the Tower of Babel. The name “Eridu” in the Sumerian language means “the mighty place.”

According to scholars “Eridu” and “Irad” or ‘Erad,’ Enoch’s son share linguistic roots.
Some Biblical scholars suggest that the gods in the Sumerian King Lists are deified kings or rulers in the line of Cain. While this may be true and the “Sons of God” Kings theory which is another theory for Genesis 6, may have some merit I would argue that the Biblical context in Genesis 6 focuses on the lineage of two lines of descendants rather than the deification of Cain’s line.

Of significant interest is that the Sumerian King Lists describes the birth of Cain and Abel. It records the murder of Abel and the banishment of Cain’s family to the east of Eden or land of Nod which means ‘wandering’.
To ‘wander’ all through Scripture is a form of God’s chastisement for disobedience. It can be physical or spiritual wandering. Both signify that one is cursed with separation from God’s blessings.
So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the Lord was destroyed. Numbers 32:13
With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Psalms 119:10
A man who wanders from the way of understanding, will rest in the assembly of the dead. Proverbs 21:16
Wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever. Jude 1:13
The Cainites, decendants of Cain, built their own kingdom and rejected God’s ways. They were mighty, renowned men. Elitist and strong in human might and power.
Genesis 4:17-24 says that Cain and his descendants invented trade, commerce, metalworking, secular music, and hunting. (mighty hunter)
In ancient South Arabian and West Semitic records, the root word qyn (Cain) means “metalsmith” or “craftsman.”

Flavius Josephus in his historical record associates Cainite metallurgy with the creation of weapons and human warfare. (The Antiquities of the Jews, 1.52–1.71)
If these “god kings” were warfaring men, then it stands to reason that they could take any women they chose from another tribe.
However, that does not exclude the Sethite view that the godly line mixed with the ungodly line, however it occurred. Though temptation or force or both.
What it does not prove is that the “Sons of God,” were fallen angels.
In Genesis 6:2, it says that the sons of God “saw” that the daughters of men were “attractive,” so they “took” as their wives any they chose.
So, in keeping with Biblical context, we see a spiritual principle at work.
In Genesis 3:6 Eve saw the fruit, and it was pleasant to the eyes, so she took and ate.
Later in Genesis 6, we see the taking of forbidden fruit again, which causes a falling away that results in God’s judgment.
