Christians are justified freely by grace or undeserved mercy. That means our right standing with God is made legitimate by God’s gift, given not by our own merit but by his mercy.
This occurs because of the redemption that is IN Christ Jesus. (being saved from death due to sin)
Notice that it is by being IN Christ Jesus that we are saved.
The word IN means to be enclosed by or surrounded by something else.
IN is the key word to focus on to understand our position as a child of God.
IN Christ, we are new creatures. Our redemption comes not from outside or through external realities but by being IN Christ.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Christian identity is IN CHRIST. We are positioned in a place of enclosure IN Christ.
Romans 6:3 says that we were baptized into Jesus Christ and were baptized into his death.
In other words, the Christian is emerged IN CHRIST.
Emerged in the death of Jesus Christ.
The death of Jesus Christ on the cross makes the born-again believer emerged INTO him.
Colossians 3:3 says Christians are dead IN Christ, and as the Chapter continues, it tells us that our life is not our own. We are now IN CHRIST.
Therefore, we belong to Jesus Christ because he has purchased us with his own blood.
Once we are saved, we have risen with Christ.
Jesus Christ’s resurrection raises us up with him IN heavenly places. We are now seated positionally with him in his victory.
Ephesians 2:4-7
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
In putting this together, Christians are Justified by being In Christ because of his death and resurrection.
Christians are dead In Christ because of his death, so we are not our own anymore. Christians are seated with Christ IN heavenly places or from a kingdom of God position.
From this position, Christians are to operate in this world. In Christ, we have become his ambassadors.
An ambassador is a representative. We have been commissioned to preach reconciliation to those who do not yet know Jesus Christ.
“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20
